JOB TITLE: DATA ENGINEER
A: Purpose and Scope
The primary responsibility for a Data Engineer is to carry out monitoring tasks in a safe, timely and accurate manner in order to assist in the efficient completion of exploration and development wells for oil and gas.
Data Engineers help ensure efficiency and cost control by providing the Client with detailed interpretations and analysis’ of geology, oil and gas shows, drilling parameters, pressure parameters, hydraulics and well costs during drilling of a well.
The Data Engineer constructs detailed Daily and Final Reports based on the data gathered during drilling and completing. This position may be used for the provision of specialized Formation Pore Pressure Evaluation Services.
The following illustrates the general responsibilities of a Data Engineer with respect to rig site duties.
01 Planning - Organization - Control
- Assume full responsibility for the proper management of the mud-logging unit, including crew, equipment and operations whilst on tour.
- Promote new techniques and activities in order to increase potential markets and stay ahead of competition. Be aware of ILI capabilities and ensure client in the field is made aware of potential services/techniques.
- Be prepared to supply the Client with technical information concerning equipment and processes used in mud logging, as well as any other relevant information requested by Client.
The scope of work for each operator may vary significantly, and the individual job responsibilities vary as a result. The following is a generalized outline of core responsibilities that are to be provided as a base level on ALL contracts.
- Supervise the Mud-Logging and Sample Catching crew.
- Maintain personal knowledge of current techniques for the interpretation of well data.
- Design and produce computer generated Logs as specified and requested by the Client in the scope of work.
- Use industry and Client provided gas interpretation methods to evaluate quality of reservoirs and source rocks.
- Examine and describe samples as per oil industry standards and client’s specifications for specific indications related to drilling efficiency and pore pressure evaluation.
- Understand and use “quick-look” analysis of electric (wire-line) and MWD logs as requested by the Client.
Gas and Drilling Parameters
- Monitor and record drilling mechanical parameters.
- Confirm or adjust formation fluid pressure estimates (made by Client during the well planning phase) by correlation with values obtained during drilling.
- Confirm or adjust estimates of formation fracture resistance (made by Client during the well planning phase) using values obtained during drilling.
- Help well site personnel determine the mud densities required for primary well control. Maintain primary well control by anticipating pressure imbalances where possible.
- Optimize hydraulics planning made by Client to improve rate of penetration during subsequent drilling.
- Where possible, help Client optimize drilling mechanical parameters to improve rate of penetration and reduce drilling costs.
- To reliably inform and advise the Client of well conditions during all drilling related well site operations.
- Apply International Logging’s resources and personal knowledge to ensure efficient execution of well site operations, including casing and cementing operations, directional drilling, well evaluation/testing, fishing and remedial operations.
- Permanently understand and monitor all well site operations. As needed, help well site personnel to understand and use data interpretations provided by International Logging.
- Manage the well database and ensure the quality and integrity of the well data.
- When necessary, assist well site personnel in determining the best procedure, and the fluid density required for secondary well control (kick control).
- Establish accurate and comprehensive Logs as per client’s format.
- Update all logs, prints and plots requested by Client daily and as required.
- Provide all interested parties with regular and timely reports based on geological and drilling data.
- Submit daily reports (Geology, Pressures, Hydraulics, Deviation, etc.) to Client representatives at the time specified by the Client.
- Notify well site personnel of any anticipated or observed drilling problems related to geology.
- Produce summaries of bore-hole hydraulics in use (daily and at Client’s request), using the appropriate calculation model for well site conditions.
- Annotate daily instrument charts clearly and correctly, and organize them for later use by the Client.
- Design and produce composite logs based on mudlogging, wire line and/or MWD data when contracted for by Client.
- Provide any other reports or documents based on well data as requested by Client.
- Ensure all information required to complete the final well report is identified, monitored, recorded, and available on time for inclusion into the final report.
- Prepare the Final Report as per Client’s specifications within 7 days after completion.
- Correctly fill out any Monthly or Weekly Report and dispatch it to the base by the first of the following month for correct Client billing. Ensure that the Monthly Activity report is completed correctly.
- Keep in regular contact with the local base to report the current work situation and discuss possible problems in the field.
- Keep in mind the basic concept of service; ensure that all tasks performed for the Client meet or exceed the customer’s and ILI’s standards.
- Remember that satisfaction of the Client is not only a function of the service itself, but also of the way it is provided. Human relations are an essential part of the job.
- Maintain the image of the Company and do not let internal problems interfere with service to the Client.
- Control costs by regularly and carefully following stocks and properly maintaining equipment, thus keeping reordering and emergency shipments to a minimum. Minimize wastage in all areas of operations.
- Know the basic terms of the service contract with the Client and be prepared to resolve any problems involving contracted equipment and services.
- Perform regular and frequent calibration checks of instruments. Check and verify sensor instrument calibrations at the intervals specified in the relevant technical documents.
Ensure that all equipment is functioning properly, ensure that all necessary routine maintenance is performed and necessary repairs performed as required on all equipment, particularly sensors. Report breakdowns immediately to the appropriate persons.
- Propose to Management innovative ideas for improvement of techniques and equipment used in the mud logging process. Ensure a high standard of quality for installation, operation and service of equipment.
- Maintain equipment/stock inventory.
- Rig-Up unit and all equipment as required, to conform to scope of work. Ensure all installations are performed in a safe manner.
- Submit a detailed report of any equipment or software malfunctions to the base and report the action(s) taken to repair or solve the problems.
- Be aware of safety regulations and procedures as specified by the Client, International Logging, and relevant safety authorities; respect safety regulations in all circumstances.
- Perform Local Risk Assessments to ensure that hazardous operations are minimized, controlled or procedures are put in place to minimize the hazardous nature of the operation
- Assist in completing Accident Near Miss investigations as required.
- Recommend improvements to the Safety Policies and Procedures especially when accidents or near misses show an evident necessity.
- Ensure clients and crews are aware of International Logging safety policies.
- Perform Audit/Inspection of local operations as required.
- Ensure that all subordinates have and use all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (safety boots, gloves, hardhats, etc.).
- Be aware of and implement all requirements of the Client’s systems within the scope of operations. The major objective is to provide the best services in order to meet and/or maintain client satisfaction. Ensure that the quality directives are understood and implemented.
- Ensure clients at the rig-site are aware of ILI quality aims.
- Use personal knowledge and well site experience to improve the quality of the mud logging service.
09 Personal Behavior
- Build an attitude of teamwork with the other well site personnel.
- Be on time for crew changes and the start of each working shift.
- Ensure that work is not left over for completion by the following shift.
- Remain at well site and continue providing service if relief is restricted or delayed.
- Share experience and knowledge with less experienced loggers, either in overall terms, or in term of local operations.
- Stay in touch with oil industry developments via trade publications, technical papers and oil industry contacts.
- Assist with allocation of crews with Local Area/Regional Management.
- Maintain personal competence records. Recommend training, and ensure performance evaluations of employees are performed as required.
- Verify personnel competence levels.
- Permanently monitor skills, attitude, aptitude and motivation of all personnel under his control.
- Identify and report potential personnel problems and system anomalies.
- Assist in maintaining crew database, updating records, experience etc.
- Supervise, and when necessary, help the mud loggers in the performance of geological monitoring tasks, gas detection and drilling parameter monitoring.
Actively participate in the evaluation of mud logging and data engineer trainees.
- Investigate and routinely monitor possibilities for local recruitment of personnel (level of qualifications, training, aptitude, etc.).
A Data Engineer is required to have:
- A minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Geology (BSc.), Petroleum Geology or Petroleum Engineering from a recognized University.
